FIDO Alliance is working on implementing secure digital key transfer between password managers and different platforms

The FIDO Alliance has shared its plans to ensure the seamless and secure transfer of "passkeys" between different password managers and platforms - an initiative that is the result of efforts by Apple, Google, Microsoft, 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane and other companies that are part of the FIDO Alliance's Credential Provider Special Interest Group.

Here's What We Know

"Passkeys" is a standard developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium that was integrated into the Apple device ecosystem with the release of iOS and iPad OS 16 and macOS Venture. It allows users to sign in to apps and websites in the same way they unlock their devices - with a biometric (fingerprint or face scan) or password. Because passkeys are resistant to phishing and other online attacks, they provide a greater level of security than traditional methods such as SMS-based two-factor authentication.

The draft Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and Credential Exchange Format (CXF) specifications aim to standardise the secure transfer of credentials between different platforms and password managers, and to address the problem of their being tied to separate ecosystems, such as Apple or third-party services.

These developments could significantly expand the capabilities of Apple users by allowing them to securely transfer keys between Apple's built-in tools and third-party solutions, as well as use them on other platforms.

The project is currently open for discussion, so implementation may take some time and specifications are subject to change.
