The Australian government has decided to hand over most of the decommissioned M1A1 Abrams tanks to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Here's What We Know

Australian Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy told a meeting of NATO countries today that although Australia is not a member of the Alliance, it will transfer its tanks to Ukraine.

49 M1A1 Abrams tanks will be included in the aid package worth $164 million, and this amount of equipment will make Australia the leader in the number of Abrams provided - remember, before that 31 similar vehicles were transferred to the United States.

It is important that the decommissioning of the tanks has already taken place, but when they will arrive in Ukraine is still unknown.

For those who are not in the know

Abrams is a third-generation main battle tank manufactured by the United States. The tank is named in honour of General Creighton Abrams, former Chief of Staff of the US Army and commander of US forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. The Abrams is a heavily armed, armoured, mobile combat vehicle designed to fight in a variety of environments.
