Valve doesn't plan to release a new Steam Deck until it feels like a "generation leap"

The Steam Deck portable gaming computer has indeed become a significant success for Valve, which has repeatedly announced its plans for its next iteration. And although it may seem that the appearance of Steam Deck 2 is inevitable, this will not happen in the near future.

What we know

In a recent conversation with Reviews.org, Valve designer Lawrence Yang emphasised that the company does not plan to release new versions of Steam Deck every year. He explained that Steam Deck 2 will appear only when there is a good reason for it, which is a real "generation leap".

Young also said that they want to be transparent about not following the annual schedule and will not release something that is just incrementally better, as he feels that would be unfair to customers. He emphasised the importance of waiting for significant advances in technology that won't affect battery life before releasing the next generation of Steam Deck. He also expressed his enthusiasm for the project and noted that the team is actively working on it.

This coincides with Valve's previous comments. Last year, designer Jay Shaw mentioned that although the team was constantly considering Steam Deck 2, they would wait for the right technology to emerge before making any significant moves.
