Not even a year has passed: NATO confirms DPRK military presence in Russia
NATO spokesperson Farah Dahlalla told Interfax-Ukraine that NATO and the US have received evidence of North Korea's military deployment in Russia.
Here's What We Know
"Allies have confirmed evidence of the deployment of DPRK troops in Russia. If these troops are destined to fight in Ukraine, it will mean a significant escalation of North Korea's support for Russia's illegal war and another sign of Russia's significant losses on the front line," she said.
Dahlalla reminded that the allies are actively consulting on this issue, and representatives of the Republic of Korea will provide the information at their disposal to the North Atlantic Council for further discussion.
As a reminder, US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said on Wednesday, 23 October, that they already have evidence that the DPRK has sent its troops to Russia.
South Korea's intelligence chief has told lawmakers that 3,000 North Korean troops are in the country to train in the use of drones and other equipment before being sent to Ukraine.
The United States and NATO have not officially confirmed the information about North Korea's troop deployment, but have warned of the danger of such a scenario if it is confirmed.
In addition, Ukraine has recently recorded the movement of North Korean troops from a training base in the Far East deep into Russia. This was stated by Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Centre for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defence Council. He added that Russia plans to first use the Koreans in combat in the Kursk region.
