The National Police of Ukraine reported that migration police officers expelled a citizen of the People's Republic of China who had served a sentence for espionage from Ukraine.

Here's What We Know

The citizen of the People's Republic of China was previously imprisoned for violating the foundations of Ukraine's national security, and after completing his sentence, Zaporizhzhia law enforcement officers deported him to China.

The 48-year-old scientist, who holds a doctorate in engineering, worked at a military arms production corporation and a chemical research institute before arriving in Ukraine. In 2017, he came to Ukraine and conducted intelligence activities under the guise of official scientific and technical cooperation.

In Dnipro region, he tried to engage Ukrainian scientists in cooperation. He was detained by the SBU while trying to acquire secret developments in the field of rocket and space technology.

The court found him guilty under Article 114 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (espionage) and sentenced him to imprisonment. At first, the spy served his sentence in the Dnipro region, and later in Zaporizhzhia.

On 28 October, the day he was released, he was met by representatives of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Migration Police, the SBU and the State Migration Service to be deported from Ukraine.

Law enforcement officers took the Chinese citizen to the Mayaky-Udobne-Palanka checkpoint in Odesa region, where he was handed over to representatives of the Border Guard Service for further deportation. He is banned from entering Ukraine for the next 5 years.
