The Central News Agency (CNA) has reported that Taiwan has received the first batch of US M142 HIMARS highly mobile missile systems.

Here's What We Know

These systems will significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Taiwanese Defence Forces by enabling them to hit targets with precision-guided missiles and tactical ballistic missiles.

The HIMARS shipment arrived in Taiwan in October, and the military is currently undergoing training to master the systems. The exact number of launchers received has not yet been disclosed, but Taiwan has ordered a total of 29 such systems from the United States.

In March 2020, the Republic of China (i.e. Taiwan) submitted a request for the purchase of 15 HIMARS systems from the United States. In October of the same year, the US State Department approved the potential sale of 11 M142 launchers and related equipment to Taiwan.

In June 2021, the island signed contracts with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) for the delivery of these 11 HIMARS systems, as well as 64 M57 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles and other related equipment.

In 2022, Taiwan placed an additional order for 18 more M142 HIMARS missile systems along with supporting equipment. This decision was made after the Taiwanese Ministry of Defence cancelled its previous plan to purchase 40 M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzers.

The Ministry of Defence of the Republic of China reported that the initial deliveries of HIMARS under this project were planned for 2027. However, the United States accelerated the delivery in response to Taiwan's urgent needs.
