In early 2024, reputable insider Midori (MbKKKssTBhz5) reported that Sega is working on a reboot of the cult fighting game series Virtua Fighter, which has been stagnant since the late 90s.

Until now it was just a rumour, but now it has been confirmed by an official representative of the Japanese company.

Here's What We Know

In an interview with VGC, SEGA's head of transmedia Justin Scarpone confirmed that in addition to reviving the Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi franchises, which was announced for December 2023, Sega is also working on a new game in the Virtua Fighter series.

So right now we have several games in development that are part of the SEGA legacy that we announced last year at The Game Awards: Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi and another one called Virtua Fighter. All of these are very interesting. In some cases, we also create animated series or films with live actors that add to the legacy and become part of it.

The first Virtua Fighter game was released in 1993 and was the first fighting game in the history of video games with fully three-dimensional graphics.

There were many sequels and re-releases of Virtua Fighter for all platforms, and the last full-fledged instalment was released in 2007, after which the games of the franchise were released only for mobile devices and arcade machines.
