OpenAI acquires chat.com domain for ChatGPT

OpenAI has acquired a new short domain for its ChatGPT chatbot, which is now available at chat.com.

The new chat.com address is shorter than the previous chat.openai.com, which is still working and automatically redirects users to the main site.

It seems that OpenAI is following the example of Google, which previously acquired the ai.com domain for its Gemini project.

The new chat.com domain has a long history. A name like Chat.com is quite generic, so you can't just register it for $20 a year on Squarespace. It was first registered back in 1996, and last year it was acquired by Dharmesh Shah, the co-founder of Hubspot, for $15.5 million. Now, according to TechCrunch, OpenAI is the new owner of the domain, although the exact amount of the purchase remains unknown.

Such short and simple domains are often bought to establish dominance in a particular industry. By owning chat.com, OpenAI secures its association with the term "chat" on the Internet.
