2024 could be the hottest year in history: the planet is approaching a dangerous climate threshold

The year 2024 could be the hottest on record as global temperatures approach dangerous levels of average temperature around the world.

Here's What We Know

This was confirmed by research by the European Climate Change Service Copernicus and the World Meteorological Organisation. After a hot summer and slow progress in the fight against climate change, 2024 is likely to exceed the record set in 2023. For 2024 to avoid becoming the hottest year on record, temperatures must remain near freezing for the rest of the year.

The effects of climate change are already being felt. In June, more than 1,300 people died in Saudi Arabia due to extreme heat during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

The summer in the Northern Hemisphere was the hottest on record, exceeding the temperatures of 2023. In addition, 2024 is likely to be the first year when global temperatures will rise by more than 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels - the limit set by the Paris Climate Agreement.

This situation is forcing governments to work more actively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, without a rapid transition to clean energy sources and changes in the energy sector, the planet's temperature will continue to rise, which could lead to new climate disasters.
