Brazil wants to buy Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters
Brazil has a plan to expand its aircraft purchases under a contract with Sweden for the supply of JAS 39 Gripen fighters.
Here's What We Know
This became known after the signing of a joint declaration of intent between Swedish Defence Minister Paul Johnson and Brazilian Defence Minister Jose Mousio, which provides for the expansion of cooperation in the aviation industry.
After the signing ceremony, José Mouscio announced that Brazil plans to increase the contract for the supply of JAS 39 Gripen aircraft by 25%, which means the purchase of an additional 9 fighters to the 36 already purchased.
Sweden, in turn, has expressed interest in purchasing Brazilian Embraer C-390 transport aircraft. As part of this declaration, the government instructed the Defence Munitions Office (FMV) and the Swedish Armed Forces to start negotiations for the purchase of C-390s.
It is worth explaining that Sweden and Brazil have a strategic partnership in the defence industry, and the new letter of intent underscores the two countries' desire to strengthen cooperation in the aerospace sector.
In 2014, Brazil signed a $5.4 billion contract with Sweden's Saab to purchase 36 Jas 39 Gripen fighters, of which 28 are Gripen E (single-seat) and 8 are Gripen F (two-seat). The contract included the development of models adapted to Brazilian requirements and their production with the participation of Brazilian companies.
The first production aircraft were delivered in November 2021, and as of November 2024, Brazil has already received eight fighters.
