Apple has run into difficulties in developing the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air. The original plan was to use a high-density battery to achieve a thickness of less than 7mm, which would have made it the thinnest iPhone since the iPhone 6. However, manufacturing problems and high costs forced the company to change the plans.

Here's What We Know

The iPhone 17 Air is now expected to exceed 7mm in thickness. This calls into question its competitiveness as the current iPhone 16 Plus is 7.8mm thick. Despite this, the iPhone 17 Air will offer significant improvements including a ProMotion display with a 120Hz refresh rate, an upgraded 48 MP camera sensor and an improved 24 MP front camera. Apple's own 5G modem integration is also expected.

Samsung is also experiencing similar battery issues with the Galaxy S25 Slim, which could lead to an increase in its thickness.
