The German government has approved the export of Typhoon fighter jets to Turkey as part of a programme to create a reliable circle of suppliers.

Here's What We Know

The decision to export Eurofighter jets to Turkey was made by the consortium countries - the UK, Spain and Italy - under considerable pressure to implement the deal and attract additional investment in the Eurofighter programme.

The purchase of these aircraft is part of a plan to strengthen the Turkish Air Force, which comes amid changes in the region, including Greece's receipt of Rafale fighter jets from France and Turkey's unsuccessful negotiations to purchase US F-35As.

Overcoming obstacles from the German government paves the way for negotiations on the purchase of 40 fighter jets for the Turkish Air Force.

It is not yet known whether these will be new aircraft or those already in service with a European country. This upgrade will be important for replacing the outdated F-4E Phantom 2s, which, although upgraded in the early 2000s to the Terminator 2000 variant, are still insufficient for today's challenges.

The order for the new Eurofighter Typhoon will allow Turkey to partially overcome the effects of sanctions that have affected its fleet and delayed the upgrade of its equipment.

The Eurofighter consortium, in turn, continues to modernise the Typhoon, aiming to bring it up to the level of the latest combat vehicles, such as the Korean KF-21, French Rafale and Chinese J-10C.
