YangWang U9 electric supercar fails to break Porsche Taycan's record at the Nürburgring
BYD is attracting attention again, this time with its YangWang U9 electric supercar, which completed a lap of the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany in 7 minutes 17.9 seconds. Impressive performance no doubt, but as always, the devil lies in the details.
Here's What We Know
The U9's result looks pretty solid, especially for an electric car. But to the top of the Nürburgring record tables, BYD's supercar is not yet reaching the top. Earlier, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra prototype completed a lap of this difficult track in 6:46.874 minutes. The production Porsche Taycan Turbo GT managed 7:07.55 minutes, while the Rimac Nevera did it in 7:05.298 minutes.
The Chinese automaker also hinted that the YangWang U9 may not have reached its full potential yet and could theoretically still compete for the top spots on the list.
Speed Record
However, the U9 achieved its best speed (and a new record among Chinese production cars) on the oval track on 7 November, clocking 391.94 km/h (243.54 mph). This achievement puts the U9 among the fastest electric cars in the world. Here, however, it is also still behind the 438.7 km/h (272.6 mph) Aspark Owl and the 412 km/h (256 mph) Rimac Nevera.
Features and price
The Yangwang U9 began production in August. The car measures 4,966 mm in length, 2,029 mm in width, 1,295 mm in height, 2,900 mm in wheelbase and weighs 2,475 kg. The U9 is powered by four electric motors with a total output of 1,305 hp and 1,680 Nm of torque. The battery capacity is 80 kWh and the range in the CLTC cycle is 465 kilometres.
The YangWang U9 starts at 1.68 million yuan (approximately $233,000). In Europe, this electric supercar is not yet certified.
