It's official: HBO's Harry Potter series won't be released until 2027 - the writers haven't even started active production yet
In the spring of 2023, the media holding company Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed work on a TV series based on the Harry Potter universe.
It will be a complete reboot, with new actors and a more detailed reflection of the events of the books by J.K. Rowling.
Here's What We Know
It was immediately stated that the series will not be released anytime soon. It is known that casting for the main roles has just begun. The authors are looking for children from the UK and Ireland from 9 to 11 years old, and such age should be at the child by the start of filming in April 2025 - so it became clear when the active work on the series will begin
In a new interview, HBO and Max's head of content, Casey Bloys, clarified that the Harry Potter series won't be released until 2027.
"When we started doing this project, we assumed, 'Oh, it could be... probably 2027, early 2027.' That's about right, but it's not a specific timeline because we're just starting the process of working on the script and casting.
In addition, Bloys said that the writers want to shoot the first few seasons as quickly as possible, as the young actors are actively growing up and changes in their appearance will be clearly visible on screen.
One idea is to film the first and second seasons very close together. Since for children the period of jump in age from 11 to 13 years is very noticeable. Things are easier with the period between 13 and 15 years of age. So we will have to think hard about planning and shooting so that the actors don't grow too much between seasons.
As a reminder, it was recently revealed that the HBO series will be closely linked to the Hogwarts Legacy 2 game, which is already in development and will be released in the same period as the first season of the Harry Potter series.
