US defence concern Lockheed Martin has unveiled a prototype of a new multiple rocket launcher system that will be four times more powerful than HIMARS.

Here's What We Know

The as yet unnamed truck-based 10×10 MKR18 LVSR was unveiled at the Human-Machine Integration Summit IV.

The new system is versatile and can launch up to twenty 227mm GMLRS guided rockets, significantly more than the M142 HIMARS, which can only use six such rockets.

The launcher is versatile, with each pod of the new MLRS carrying up to six GMLRS missiles, two PrSMs or one ATACMS. It employs both strike weapons, such as surface-to-air interceptors, and short-range ballistic missiles.

Experts note that unlike HIMARS, the new launcher is less mobile and is focused on creating a more powerful firing position with the ability to provide integrated defence. The platform can also be integrated into the Army's IBCS battle management system to improve air and missile defence.

Lockheed Martin engineers are working to enable the system to launch hypersonic missiles as well.
