Samsung Display defeats BOE in patent dispute over OLED technology

Samsung Display has achieved significant success in its patent dispute with Chinese company BOE.

Here's What We Know

The US International Trade Commission (ITC) has reached a preliminary conclusion that BOE has illegally used Samsung Display's patents on OLED screens. The ruling gives Samsung the upper hand in the case and allows it to seek an injunction against the import and sale of BOE's patent-infringing products.

The ITC found that BOE infringed 3 Samsung Display patents and importers of BOE's OLED screens infringed another 4 patents. The ITC's final decision is expected in March next year. If the import ban is enforced, it could lead to an increase in Samsung's business as well as higher smartphone prices and repairs in the US.

This patent lawsuit was initiated by Samsung Display in December 2022 against 17 importers and wholesalers in the US, including BOE. In retaliation, BOE and other Chinese companies have filed a lawsuit to invalidate the patents, but this has not yet yielded the expected results.
