Black Myth: Wukong is one of the lowest-rated games for Game of the Year in the history of The Game Awards. The game has 81 points on Metacritic.

Usually, games with at least 85 points are nominated in this category, and sometimes they have a score of 90+ points. Nevertheless, there have been cases in the history of the ceremony when a game with a score of less than 85 got into the highest category. These games were Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Control, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil Village, and Stray

Nevertheless, the excitement around Wukong in the summer was so great that it was not surprising for some players to see it in this nomination.
