Kia has revealed a concept car made of apples and mushrooms

Kia has unveiled a new experimental EV3 Study Car that demonstrates the future of sustainable transport. Innovative materials were used to build the concept, from recycled plastic to biomaterials based on apple peel and mushroom waste.

What's special about the EV3 Study Car?

The concept is based on the production Kia EV3, but key body and interior panels have been replaced with materials made from recycled plastic and biomaterials. A total of 22 new technologies have been developed, which have allowed 69 parts of the car to be modified.

Special emphasis was placed on the "Car-to-Car" method, which allows the transformation of plastic from old cars into new parts: such as bumpers, boot door, door trim, etc.

In addition, natural resources were used in the project:

• "Apple Skin", a material based on apple peel, which replaced conventional leather on the steering wheel and console.
• Leather based on mushroom waste - was used for the wireless charging station.

The exterior also received a "green" upgrade: the roof and decorative elements are made of natural fibres and biopolymers.

What's next.

The Kia EV3 Study Car was unveiled at an environmental materials exhibition at the Kia Research Centre in Namyang, South Korea. The company says the project is part of a broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint. It is possible that in the future some of the developments from this concept will be applied to mass production cars.
