The Tesla Cybercab concept, an autonomous coupe that is set to form the basis of Tesla's global fleet of unmanned vehicles, has been unveiled in the UK. The presentation took place at London's Shepherd's Bush Westfield shopping centre, a month after its premiere at Warner Bros. Studios in the US.

Here's What We Know

Cybercab is a compact car with no steering wheel or pedals. The car is driven by artificial intelligence that navigates through cameras rather than the lidar or mapping software that is standard on most competitors. The cherry on the cake is wireless charging, eliminating the need for charging ports like traditional Teslas.

The Cybercab's interior design is minimalism in its purest form. Two seats, armrest, a pair of cupholders and a large touch screen, as in Model 3. The boot is quite voluminous, but there is no rear window.

The Cybercab is expected to cost around $30,000 (roughly £23,000) at the start of production, scheduled for 2027. However, Tesla has a tradition of not honouring the overly optimistic timelines for new product launches that CEO Ilon Musk promises. Therefore, no one knows the exact timing, and prices may change by then.

Cybercab is planned to be used as an alternative to Uber and Bolt, and owners will be able to rent out cars via a mobile app. But Tesla is already somewhat behind: competitors such as Waymo and Cruise already have their unmanned taxis on the streets of several US cities, although their level of autonomy does not yet reach Tesla's claimed SAE level five. At that level, you can sleep in the car for the entire journey.
