Tesla leads in the number of fatal crashes among all car brands
A new study conducted by car search engine iSeeCars has revealed that Tesla cars are involved in more fatal accidents than any other car brand.
Here's What We Know
An analysis of data from the National Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that Tesla has the highest rate of fatal crashes of any auto brand. It is followed by Kia, Buick, Dodge and Hyundai. The report also notes that high rates of fatal crashes may reflect driver behaviour more than the features of the car itself.
Other studies also highlight Tesla's safety problems. A 2022 NHTSA report claims that Tesla was responsible for about 70 per cent of car crashes involving driver assistance systems. Tesla's autopilot feature is often criticised and can play a role in accidents. In April 2024, the NHTSA said a critical safety gap in autopilot has been linked to hundreds of crashes.
Another report published in August by EpicVIN claimed that Tesla drivers are the least likely to suffer fatal injuries despite being involved in frequent crashes. According to that report and the iSeeCars study, Tesla drivers are most often involved in fatal crashes, but are the least likely to be killed in such accidents.
