Production difficulties may force Samsung to cancel the release of its flagship Exynos 2600 chip
Samsung is considering cancelling production of its new Exynos 2600 chip due to serious manufacturing issues.
Here's What We Know
The chip was supposed to use Samsung Foundry's advanced 2nm process, but the yield rate of year-old chips has been extremely low, only 10-20%. This makes mass production unprofitable.
The problems with Exynos 2600 production are reminiscent of the difficulties the company recently faced with the Exynos 2500, which also saw low yields. As such, Samsung may outsource the production of its flagship chips to Taiwanese company TSMC, which, however, would increase costs and possibly increase device prices.
Samsung is also shutting down several production lines running on outdated 4nm, 5nm and 7nm processes and restructuring its processor development team. Despite efforts to improve the 2nm process, the future of Exynos chips remains uncertain.
