Former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said that the United States should focus on military assistance to Ukraine, despite the threat of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

Here's What We Know

This position was expressed by former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen: "They should do everything possible to help Ukrainians. We still have time," she said.

This statement follows the words of Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, who said that the supply of weapons to Ukraine affects the ability of the US military to prepare for possible escalations in the region.

Although Taiwan is heavily dependent on US military support, Tsai is convinced that assistance to Ukraine helps to deter Chinese aggression. "Ukraine's victory will be the most effective deterrent," she said.

It is worth noting that over the past 8 years, Taiwan has increased its defence budget by 80%, to a record $19 billion in 2024. However, this is not enough, according to Donald Trump. The former US president believes that Taiwan should pay more and increase defence spending to 10% of GDP.
