In 2016, the first feature-length film in the Warcraft universe premiered, but it never got a sequel. Many fans of the franchise were surprised by this, because although the film turned out to be controversial, but the target audience liked it and brought about $440 million at the box office, which seemed to be enough arguments for the creation of a sequel.

Well, it looks like Warcraft fans will wait for the new film after all.

Here's What We Know

Executive producer of the Warcraft franchise Holly Longdale gave an interview to Variety, in which she confirmed that Microsoft, which last year acquired Activision Blizzard and automatically became the owner of all its assets and intellectual property, is interested in the development of Warcraft, including in the format of films and TV series.

It's too early to talk about specific decisions, but Holly Longdale noted that the success of Amazon's Fallout series and the upcoming Minecraft film are inspiring Microsoft to adapt its game franchises.

That said, Xbox president Matt Booty reasonably noted that "not every game is right for linear media," so careful thought should be given to investing in such projects.
