GTA VI may surprise with advanced ray tracing and global illumination: Rockstar Games modifies RAGE engine

Almost every game from Rockstar studio was a huge technological breakthrough and, of course, the public expects the same effect from GTA VI. Earlier it was reported that the new crime action game will offer unprecedented simulation of NPC behaviour and impressive weather system with an emphasis on the development of water and splashing behaviour. But it seems that this is far from the only thing that will surprise the long-awaited novelty.

Here's What We Know

On the network spreads a screenshot, which shows the requirements for the person who will take the position of senior programmer of the RAGE engine.

As of 2020, he must modernise the toolkit in such a way that it will allow to implement in GTA VI support for ray tracing, global lighting using advanced reflections and shadows and procedural generation of objects in the game world.

Currently, there are few open-world games that make extensive use of ray tracing. Among the few projects are Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3. It is connected not only with technical difficulties, but also with the fact that developers do not find a worthy use for such technologies.

If Rockstar will be able to implement such advanced options without serious burden on game platforms - it will be a real breakthrough. However, it should be noted that modern consoles may not be able to cope with this amount of data, so it is quite possible that the developer will have to make some compromises. And since the PS5 Pro is currently the most powerful console, it's likely to be the best platform to play GTA VI, at least until the game is released on PC.

When We Can Expect It

Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to release in autumn 2025 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
