Unrivalled success: Sony has sold 160 million copies of the PlayStation 2 - the most popular game console in history

As we previously reported, Sony has launched a website dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand.

The site tells the story of the console from the original PlayStation to the current PlayStation 5. It also publishes updated data on the number of PlayStation 2 sold.

Here's What We Know

Since the PlayStation 2 was released in 2000, Sony has sold more than 160 million units, leaving it as the most popular gaming console.

Such success was due not only to the PS2's excellent architecture and huge number of popular games, but also to the fact that the console could be used as a complete multimedia centre - it allowed you to play movies and music on DVDs, and this at a time when they were at the height of popularity.

The PS2's closest competitor is the Nintendo Switch, which has sold 146 million units since 2017.

As for the current-gen PS5 console, Sony says it has sold more than 65 million units in its four years on the market.
