Netherlands launches Europe's first V2G-enabled carsharing service
Renault Group has announced the launch of Europe's first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) carsharing service. The service will be launched in the Netherlands in partnership with We Drive Solar, MyWheels and the city of Utrecht.
Here's What We Know
MyWheels will deploy a fleet of 500 Renault 5 E-Tech electric hatchbacks as part of the project. The main 'trick' is the use of V2G bi-directional charging, developed by Mobilise (a subsidiary of the Renault Group). This technology allows the cars to be charged with clean energy and return it to the grid during peak times.

This approach has several advantages: firstly, helping to stabilise the city's electricity grid, and secondly, enabling large-scale use of electric cars in carsharing. The charging infrastructure will be provided by We Drive Solar, which will also contribute to a more sustainable energy system.
Renault cites Utrecht as a leader in green energy, with around 35 per cent of roofs in the city equipped with solar panels. The French carmaker estimates that 500 vehicles with V2G technology could provide up to 10% of the region's balancing solar and wind power.
What's next.
If all goes according to plan, the Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech and Renault 4 E-Tech models could be added to the already mentioned 500 units of Renault 5 E-Tech. A Renault Group spokesperson emphasised in a press release that this project demonstrates the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in introducing sustainable urban solutions.
