Here's What We Know

According to The Economic Times, India has begun delivering the Pinaka MLRS to Armenia almost simultaneously with the transfer of the first battery of the Akash air defence missile system this month.

The Pinaka is a 214mm multiple launch rocket system developed in India. Its artillery section is equipped with two launch containers with 12 rockets. The maximum range is 40 km and the minimum range is 10 km.

The supply contract was signed in September 2022 amid the deterioration of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Although the total value of the deal was not disclosed, the supply is expected to exceed $245.4 million.

According to Armenian sources, the country will receive four batteries of the Pinaka MLRS. This is the first export order for this system in India's history, which was announced two years ago. As part of the deal, Armenia will also receive anti-tank missiles and other ammunition.

Earlier, in February 2020, the Indian company Bharat Electronics Limited received a contract worth more than $40 million to supply Armenia with four Swathi radar artillery reconnaissance systems. It is noted that in this tender, the Indian company was significantly ahead of competitors from Russia and Poland.
