The Australian Defence Department announced that on 14 November, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment received the first four Abrams M1A2 SEP v3 tanks out of a planned 14. The remaining vehicles are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2025. It took only three months from the moment the vehicles arrived until they were officially commissioned.
The Australian Ministry of Defence emphasises the importance of these tanks in strengthening the overall military combat system. The military notes the improved performance of the M1A2 SEP v3 compared to the M1A1. In particular, Major Trent Lam emphasises the more efficient use of weapon systems.

Previously, Australia had 59 M1A1 Abrams tanks purchased in 2006-2007. After 10 years of their operation, it was decided to expand the fleet and purchase a more modern version of the M1A2 SEP v3. As a result, the country ordered 75 of these vehicles along with a number of other equipment.
In August this year, Australia retired the last M1A1 Abrams. Subsequently, it was announced that 49 of these vehicles would be transferred to Ukraine. The remaining 10 will be kept for training of the Australian military.
