British Electrogenic gives a second life to old cars by making them electric. The company's portfolio already includes an electrified Porsche 911, Land Rover Defender, Jaguar E-Type, DeLorean, Rolls-Royce Phantom and even a humble 1993 Kia Pride. Now the iconic first-generation (NA) Mazda MX-5 has joined them.

Here's What We Know

Electrogenic promises that the car's weight will only increase by 100kg after the conversion, but this is offset by a 21 per cent increase in power. In place of the original 1.8 engine are 42 kWh battery cells. A few more modules are placed instead of the fuel tank. However, electrification is reversible: if you don't like the "electric car", you can return the petrol engine and all the associated elements.

Technical details:

  • Power of the electric motor - 160 hp.
  • Torque - 310 Nm
  • Top speed - 185 km/h
  • Acceleration from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) - about 6 seconds.
  • Range - about 240 kilometres (150 miles).
  • Battery charging time - up to one hour

There are two driving modes: Eco for those who want more kilometres and Sport, which makes the Miata as "hot" as possible.

Cars with both manual and automatic transmissions can be converted to electric power. Torque is transmitted to the rear wheels through a single-stage gearbox.
