Colombian who planned sabotage in favour of Russia to be tried in Romania
A Colombian citizen who planned to arrange explosions at state facilities on instructions from Russia will be tried in Romania.
Here's What We Know
Officers of the Romanian Directorate for Combating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) detained a 34-year-old Colombian man on suspicion of planning sabotage at important facilities in the country. His case was transferred to the Bucharest Court of Appeal on 13 November and he is currently in custody.
He faces 10 to 20 years in prison on the charges. According to the investigation, in July 2024, at the instigation of another foreigner living in the Russian Federation, the man planned arson and explosions at important industrial facilities and critical infrastructure in Romania. He also filmed the facilities he planned to destroy, but thanks to police intervention, the sabotage was prevented.

Prosecutors say the man had received military training in his home country, where he gained skills in intelligence gathering. This detention came to light against the backdrop of intensified Russian subversive activity in various countries.
Earlier, US intelligence agencies warned US defence companies about Russia's plans to carry out sabotage at defence companies both in the United States and abroad. Officials say that Russian intelligence services are conducting sabotage operations against European defence companies to undermine NATO member states' support for Ukraine.
In October, four saboteurs were arrested in Poland for sending packages with explosives and hazardous materials that would spontaneously combust or detonate during transport.
