Google extends updates for Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold for two years
Google has changed its policy on Android updates for smartphones with the first generation of Tensor processors.
Here's What We Know
Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold devices will now receive two more years of OS updates, for a total of 5 years since their launch.
Previously, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 received only 3 years of OS updates, but with the new policy, these smartphones, along with the Pixel Fold, will be able to receive patches, including new features via Pixel Drops, for 5 years. These models will receive both system and security updates for five years.
This changed with the launch of the Pixel 8, for which Google has set a commitment of 7 years of updates. However, Pixel Tablets remain on a three-year policy for OS and five years for security updates.
The updated policy looks like this:
- 7 years of updates: Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9 series
- 5 years of updates: Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel Fold;
- 3 years of OS and 5 years of security: Pixel Tablet.
