Apple expects its modems to surpass Qualcomm's by 2027

Apple has been working on developing its own modem for use in its mobile devices for several years now. Apple's first 5G modem will reportedly debut in the iPhone SE 4, which will be released in 2025. Now it has been revealed that the company has set its sights on surpassing Qualcomm's modems in the coming years.

Here's What We Know

Apple's first modem will be installed not only in iPhones, but also in tablets, in particular, in the initial models of the iPad. However, the first generation of modems won't be the best on the market, losing out to Qualcomm in terms of connectivity. Apple is expected to release a second generation of mmWave-enabled modems in 2026, with plans to surpass Qualcomm by 2027.

This modem, codenamed "Prometheus," can support next-generation satellite networks and integrate artificial intelligence features. The modem's energy efficiency will be an important factor, and the real test for Apple will come in 2026, when the modem will be installed in the iPhone 18 series. How successful Apple's modem developments have been, we'll find out soon, with the release of the iPhone SE 4.
