BMW M electric cars will have four engines each
BMW has officially confirmed: all future M-series electric cars will have four motors each. The news came from Carsten Wolf, head of development for BMW M cars, in a recent video of prototype testing. He says this approach will deliver unprecedented performance, quality and features "that you can't even imagine today."
Here's What We Know
The video shows a BMW i4 M50 prototype with a spectacular design and signature M3-style 'nostrils'. The car has four electric motors, carbon-ceramic brakes, reinforced bodywork and new subframes. Obviously, engineers have worked on other aspects, but BMW is in no hurry to share all the details.
Interestingly, the company doesn't hide the fact that testing doesn't always go smoothly. At the 5:50 mark in the video, the X7 is seen helping to launch an i4 M50 prototype with a dead battery. As Wolf explains, the air conditioning compressor system was replaced beforehand to solve a particular problem, but that didn't work. The next step was to replace the front motors to get the car back on track.
