BYD is preparing an update of the Dolphin electric hatchback, which debuted four years ago. The model is spotted in the database of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (MIIT), which allows us to assess changes in design and technical specifications before the official presentation.

What's changed.

The updated BYD Dolphin gets more stylish headlamps that now flank the fenders, a compact plug in place of the grille and smaller air intakes. The profile remains almost unchanged apart from the new 16 and 17-inch discs. At the rear, a revised bumper and modern BYD Seal 06 GT-inspired taillight graphics are noticeable.

The car's dimensions have increased slightly: length is 4,280 mm (+155 mm compared to the 2021 Chinese version), width is 1,770 mm, height is 1,570 mm and wheelbase is 2,700 mm.

New engine and batteries

The Dolphin 2026 will be offered in three versions: 94 hp, 174 hp (new to the line-up) and 201 hp. Expect BYD Blade LFP batteries with a capacity of 44.93 or 60.48 kWh with a range of up to 520 kilometres on the Chinese CTLC cycle.

The price of the updated hatchback is not yet known. The previous iteration of the BYD Dolphin is priced between ¥99,800 and ¥129,800 ($13,800-17,900) in China. The updated electric car is expected to make its official debut in mid-2025.
