"Concord couldn't offer anything unique": game director of successful Marvel Rivals explains the failure of Sony's shooter
NetEase Games is celebrating the success of its new project Marvel Rivals, which launched last Friday and attracted more than 10 million players in just 72 hours. This success is especially impressive against the backdrop of the failure of another hero shooter, Concord.
Here's What We Know
In an interview with VideoGamer, the game's game director Thaddeus Sasser noted that Concord failed to offer anything unique that could interest long-time fans of the genre. He also emphasised the "cost of switching", when players who have already invested in Overwatch are unlikely to decide to change the game.
Despite the success of Marvel Rivals, Sasser believes that it is difficult to predict the game's results. "As a developer, you're always nervous until you get the audience's reaction," he said. "No one can predict that exactly."
Marvel Rivals has an advantage with its diverse roster of superheroes. Sasser shared his enthusiasm for the game concept: "I want to be Storm or Doctor Strange in the game."
The game is available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The first season will launch next month, bringing new maps, heroes, and cosmetic items.
