Ukraine provided military aid to Syrian rebels - The Washington Post
According to sources familiar with Ukrainian military activities, Ukrainian intelligence provided support to Syrian rebels in their offensive on Damascus, which led to the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.
Here's What We Know
A few weeks before the offensive, about 20 Ukrainian drone operators and 150 drones were sent to the rebel headquarters in Idlib, Syria. The support provided by the Ukrainians was intended to weaken the position of Russia and its allies in the Middle East.
Although Kyiv's assistance was not a key factor in the overthrow of Assad, it was part of a larger Ukrainian effort to undermine Russian influence in Syria and neighbouring regions. Russian officials have repeatedly expressed concern about the presence of Ukrainian special forces in Idlib, so Moscow has tried to minimise Kyiv's role in the operation in public.
Ukraine also assisted in training Syrian rebels in the use of drones, which have become an increasingly important element in the fight against the Russian army in the region. According to sources, Ukrainian specialists, in particular from the Main Intelligence Directorate, are actively working with Syrian forces, providing them with technological and tactical support.
