LG discontinues production of UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray players
LG has officially discontinued production of its Blu-ray players, including the UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray models. It is reported by FlatpanelsHD.
Here's What We Know
The remaining products will remain on sale, but the company does not plan to release new models. This decision was not unexpected, as other major manufacturers, including Oppo and Samsung, had previously left the market.
UHD Blu-ray is a modern optical disc format that allows you to watch videos in 4K (3840×2160 pixels). This is significantly higher than standard Blu-ray, which only supports Full HD (1920×1080 pixels).UHD Blu-ray delivers sharper images, richer colours and better detail, which is especially noticeable on large screens or modern 4K-enabled TVs.
The UBK80 and UBK90 debuted in 2018, but since then, the popularity of physical media has declined significantly.
However, LG is not completely out of the market and may return if demand increases. Alternatives are still available: The Magnetar UDP800 and game consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X support the format.
Streaming services are becoming more popular, so fewer people are buying Blu-ray players.
