ABB E-mobility has announced a new compact charger, the C50, designed specifically for urban and commercial locations. This model is designed to address the lack of infrastructure for electric vehicles in densely populated areas.

Here's What We Know

According to ABB, the majority of daily trips take place within 50 kilometres (30 miles) of people's homes, making home charging the most convenient solution. However, 60 per cent of urban households do not have access to this option. Shopping centres and places where people spend 30-90 minutes charging electric cars are becoming ideal charging points. However, businesses face challenges:

  • AC chargers are too slow for daytime use
  • DC chargers are powerful, but too expensive and complex to integrate.

This has created a gap between slow home charging and fast charging stations that the ABB C50 Charger can fill.

The C50 Compact Charger has a power output of 50 kW (DC), which is enough to charge an electric car battery in 60-90 minutes. The device is extremely compact - only 23.5 cm deep, making it the thinnest in its class. With two connectors, it doubles the availability during peak times, while a 21.5-inch touchscreen display with a new user interface simplifies interaction.
