Rheinmetall, one of Germany's leading defence companies, has received an order to supply 20 Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to Ukraine. The order was placed by the German government in December 2024 and will be financed by the German budget.

Rheinmetall does not disclose the exact value of the contract, but notes that it is "in the double digits in millions of euros". The delivery of these vehicles is scheduled for the first half of 2025.

Earlier, the concern reported that it had already handed over more than 100 Marder combat vehicles to Ukraine as part of military assistance. These vehicles, which were previously used by the German armed forces, are being overhauled at Rheinmetall's facilities in Unterlüs and Kassel before being shipped to Ukraine.

The project to modernise and transfer the BMPs was initiated in the spring of 2022 and is funded by the German government. The first batch of 20 vehicles left for Ukraine on 21 March 2023.

As of December 2024, the Ukrainian Defence Forces have received 140 Marder 1A3 BMPs, which are in service with various units, including the Marines. In addition, Rheinmetall provides repair and maintenance of these combat vehicles directly in Ukraine.
