The Elder Scrolls Online changes its strategy: abandoning annual expansions in favour of seasonal content
ZeniMax Online Studios has announced a significant change in the approach to The Elder Scrolls Online updates. Starting in 2025, the game will abandon the annual major expansions known as "chapters" in favour of a seasonal content release model.
Here's What We Know
Since 2017, The Elder Scrolls Online has received large-scale expansions every year, starting with Morrowind and ending with the recent Gold Road. However, according to studio director Matt Firor, the team decided to change this approach to better meet current industry trends and player preferences.
In 2025, the developers plan to move to a seasonal model of content release, offering seasons lasting three or six months. Each season will contain themed story content, events, items in the store, dungeons, and more. This approach will allow the game to be updated more frequently and maintain the interest of the community without the need to develop major expansions once a year.
In addition, the team plans to focus on improving the experience for new players, expanding content for well-known factions such as the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves' Guild, as well as improving the game's interface, visuals, and performance.
