Honda has announced a new e:HEV hybrid system
Honda held a press briefing during which it announced the next generation of its e:HEV two-motor hybrid system. It is claimed that it will provide efficient driving in all conditions by automatically switching between three modes:
- EV Drive Mode - driving solely on battery electric power;
- Hybrid Drive Mode - driving from an electric motor that is powered by electricity generated by the petrol engine;
- Engine Drive Mode - unique to the Honda e:HEV, in which the internal combustion engine is directly connected to the wheels via the clutch
What will change.
Honda will update the components of the hybrid system, including the motors, drive and control units. This applies to both the small system (with the 1.5-litre engine) and the medium system (with the 2.0-litre). According to the company, the new elements will provide a better eco-friendliness and vehicle experience.

The new 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre direct-injection engines will be powered by the Atkinson cycle. Combined with the new platform, fuel consumption for mid-size models will be reduced by more than 10 per cent compared to Honda's first-generation hybrid system.

Honda says the new engines will achieve the highest combustion efficiency, delivering power and fuel efficiency even during intense acceleration or normal driving.
The new e:HEV system will appear in the Honda Prelude coupe, which is due to go on sale in 2025.
