CD Projekt Red's team working on The Witcher 4 is aware that the decision to make Ciri the main character of the game may be controversial among fans. In an interview with VGC, Narrative Director Philip Weber confirmed that they expected a negative reaction from some fans who were used to playing as Geralt in the previous instalments of the series.

Here's What We Know

Weber said that he understands the players' concerns, as many of them loved playing as Geralt. "We recognise that this may be a legitimate concern for some people," he said. However, the team is keen to prove that the choice of Ciri as the protagonist is a valid and interesting one.

Weber emphasised that the decision to introduce Tsiri as a protagonist was not spontaneous. She was already introduced as the second playable character in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and played an important role in Andrzej Sapkowski's novels. This allows the team to tell new stories about what it means to become a witch.

Executive Producer Małgorzata Mitręga also noted that many players have welcomed this choice and understand the reasons behind it. "Our best answer to these questions will be the game itself," she added. The developers hope to show players why Ciri can become a worthy heroine in The Witcher 4.

We would also like to remind you that The Witcher 4 will be uninfluenced by the Netflix series, and CD Projekt has a story to tell the world. And let's not forget that CD Projekt has confirmed the return of Geralt.
