Fiat and Maserati pause electric car production due to low demand

Stellantis has extended the pause in production of Fiat and Maserati electric cars. According to Reuters, instead of the previously announced date of 5 January, the Mirafiori plant in Italy will be idled until at least 20 January.

Here's What We Know

The Mirafiori plant has stopped production of the Fiat 500e, as well as the Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio. Production of the latter two is scheduled to resume only from 3 February. This is not the first pause: the plant was already idle last year in September and October.

The reason is obvious - sales of electric cars do not meet expectations. Stellantis, like other manufacturers, is forced to cut production and rethink its electrification strategy.

Previously, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares blamed poor marketing for Maserati's low sales. However, a conflict between Tavares and the board over the company's future course led to his sudden resignation earlier this month.
