From 1 January 2025, WhatsApp will stop supporting several legacy Android devices, marking the end of an era for smartphones released more than a decade ago.

Here's What We Know

This decision was made due to the development of technology and the need to adapt the application to new features.

The main reason for this move is WhatsApp's continuous improvement. As the app integrates new features, including Meta AI, which allows users to ask questions, generate images, and create content directly in the app, support for older versions of Android has become problematic. In particular, devices running Android KitKat (version 4.4, released in 2013) will no longer have access to WhatsApp services.

List of devices that will no longer be supported

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini (2013)
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
  • HTC: One X, One X Plus, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

These models were released between 2012 and 2014 and are now considered outdated for WhatsApp requirements. Although the app will remain installed on the devices, users will not be able to connect to Meta's servers, making WhatsApp unusable.

This decision highlights the importance of updating devices to access the latest features. Users of older phones should consider upgrading to newer Android models to continue to enjoy WhatsApp and other modern apps without interruption.
