Missiles for the F-16: US announces new $500m military aid package for Ukraine
The US Department of Defence has announced the transfer of the 74th military aid package to Ukraine, which includes ground equipment and aircraft weapons to support F-16 fighters.
Here's What We Know
According to the published list, the package includes AIM-7, RIM-7, AIM-9M aircraft missiles, air-to-ground ammunition, armoured bridge pavers, secure communications equipment, small arms, as well as support equipment and spare parts.
In addition, the assistance includes funding for training of Ukrainian specialists, support services for weapons and their transportation.
The AIM-7 and RIM-7 air-to-air missiles are used for modernised Buk-M1 air defence systems, allowing Ukraine to continue operating its air defence systems after the Soviet missiles have been depleted. The AIM-9M, equipped with thermal imaging homing heads, are designed for use on F-16s and are already being used to intercept Russian cruise missiles.
Air-to-ground munitions can include Mark 82 bombs with JDAM-ER and GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bomb modules, which are actively used by the Ukrainian Air Force.
