At CES 2025, VideoLAN unveiled a new feature for VLC Player that enables automatic subtitle creation and translation using artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

This feature works locally and does not require an internet connection. VideoLAN president Jean-Baptiste Kempf showed how open-source AI models create subtitles in multiple languages in real time. It is also reported that more than 100 languages will be supported in the future. AI-based subtitles were developed as a plug-in using OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition system, but are now built directly into the VLC app.

VideoLAN also celebrated reaching the 6 billion downloads mark, highlighting the growth of active VLC users even in the era of streaming services. No word yet on when the new feature will launch.
