Kingdom Hearts 4 may continue the franchise's crossroads theme
Although Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced a while ago, franchise director Tetsuya Nomura has only just started teasing the themes we can expect from the game. Under a post on X celebrating the 15th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, he wrote:
"Apparently, the plan is the release my comment alongside the teaser trailer for BBS from the secret movie in KH2. So, taking my cue from that video, I’d like to give you an insight into the crossroads.".
Here's What We Know
Nomura emphasised the recurring theme of crossroads in Kingdom Hearts, where characters are often waiting for someone or meet by the will of fate. Key examples include the three sword wielders waiting at a crossroads in the holiday video, and Sora meeting a black-cloaked figure who invites him to Castle Oblivion in Chain of Memories. He explained that the crossroads symbolise the loss of something in order to gain something, and this motif continues in the series, leading to the War of the Keyblade and the meeting of the Lost Masters in Kingdom Hearts 3.
Nomura also referenced the Faustian myth of the man who trades his soul at the crossroads. Despite these themes, Kingdom Hearts 4 will serve as a reboot of the franchise, making it easier for new players to get acquainted with the story. Details about the game's release are still scarce, although it is confirmed that it will be developed on the Unreal Engine 5, which improves lighting and detail.
