The Ministry of Defence of Slovakia is considering the purchase of Swedish CV90120-T light tanks as an alternative to the expensive Leopard 2A8. This was announced by the Minister of Defence of Slovakia Robert Kalinak.

Here's What We Know

According to the government, Swedish tanks are a more cost-effective solution that allows purchasing more units for a lower price. The renewal of the tank fleet has become an urgent issue for the country, as Slovakia is currently using outdated Soviet T-72M1 and Leopard 2A4 tanks received from Germany as compensation for the transfer of 30 BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine.

In May 2024, Slovakia announced its intention to purchase more than 100 Leopard 2 tanks, which would cost about $2 billion. However, this decision may be reconsidered.

Slovakia is currently participating in the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle production programme. In particular, the local company Koval Systems has opened a new shop for the production of turrets for the CV90 MkIV, ensuring localisation of production by 40%.

If the CV90120-T is selected, Slovakia will be able to increase the share of local production, including full tank hull production in the country.

For those who don't know

The CV90120-T light tank was developed by the Swedish company Hägglunds Vehicle on the basis of the CV9040 infantry fighting vehicle. The main armament of the tank is a 120 mm CTG smoothbore gun, which provides power similar to main battle tanks. The ammunition capacity is 40 rounds, of which 10 are located in the loading mechanism and the rest in the hull.
