R.I.P. Nokia: HMD Global officially ceases production of all Nokia smartphones

HMD Global has officially announced the discontinuation of all Nokia-branded smartphones, marking the end of an era in the history of the legendary brand's mobile devices. Nokia smartphones have been moved to a separate category on HMD's website, symbolising their formal withdrawal from the company's active product portfolio.

Here's What We Know

Finnish company Nokia, which once dominated the mobile phone market, struggled in the late 2000s due to the growing popularity of iOS and Android smartphones. In 2013, the Nokia brand was acquired by Microsoft to produce its Windows Phone smartphones, but this strategy was not successful and in 2016, Finnish company HMD Global acquired the rights to manufacture and sell Nokia-branded phones and smartphones, raising hopes of a revival.

However, despite efforts, Nokia's Android smartphones have failed to regain their former glory. In 2024, HMD announced its multi-brand strategy, focusing on developing its own line of devices. The discontinuation of all Nokia-branded smartphones signalled HMD's complete transition to its own internal brand.

The Nokia brand continues to exist in the conventional handset segment, while the company itself has successfully moved into network infrastructure and telecoms, becoming a leader in 5G, cloud computing and Internet of Things technologies.
