General Motors (GM) has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a new electric drive system with four motors - two on each axle. This technology promises a number of advantages over single- and dual-motor propulsion systems in the handling, efficiency and dynamics of electric vehicles, including for SUVs and pickup trucks.
Here's What We Know
The four-motor system allows each motor to operate independently, providing precise control of power delivery to each wheel. This opens up new possibilities for:
- Optimal torque distribution, which improves grip and handling on any pavement;
- Improved energy efficiency, especially thanks to regenerative braking, which returns more energy to the battery;
- Performance in challenging conditions, such as towing or off-road driving.
While the patent doesn't specify specific models, the technology is particularly suited for large electric pickup trucks, SUVs and high-performance vehicles.
